The existing of Corey is given to us in the end of the song. She is not an imaginary lover. Therefore in fact she is a real person to John Joseph. Has it occured to anyone that she is an employee of the railroad that is on that 'one run a week that comes on roarin' down that line' She would see John Joseph on a regular basis but the townsfolk and the narrator would not know her.. Furthermore it would give the narrator the motivation to take John Joseph's job after his death. Think about it. Joseph W
